Earlier today on Facebook, I mentioned that I will be dedicating the month of October to Domestic Violence Awareness. Each day, I will light a digital candle in verse and/or prose.
According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, domestic violence can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender. It can happen to couples who are married, living together or who are dating. Domestic violence affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels.
If I broaden my view just a little bit, I must acknowledge that it is indeed any emotional, physical or sexual abuse towards anyone held in close confidence be it partner, child or pet. I am neither a sociologist nor a psychologist. I am a student of my own life.
The Eyes Never Lie
By: Meena Rose
Two feet planted on ground,
Head held high – darting wary eyes;
An angelic face – sad and ashen,
An endless winter trapped in bottomless eyes;
A meek presence mastering the art of invisibility,
Flighty eyes ensnared by a passerby;
A soul battered – full surrender before the battle was done,
Bleak eyes that no longer see;
My eyes overflow with tears when we pass each other by,
A sisterhood bound by pain coerced into loyalty;
Starting now, I stand with you,
Let’s break the silence.
