NaPoWriMo 2013 – Day 3

Sailing Ship

Over at NaPoWriMo, the task today is to write a Sea Shanty (Chanty). This is definitely way out of my league. However, after watching Master and Commander again over the weekend, I am inspired to tackle this prompt.

I soon got used to this singing, for the sailors never touched a rope without it . . . Some sea captains, before shipping a man, always ask him whether he can sing out at a rope.

Flashes an’ Ashes

By: Meena Rose

Farewell an’ adieu to you fair lasses – lightening flashes
O’er our blood and bloody ashes
Farewell an’ adieu to you fair roses – lightening flashes
O’er our blood and bloody ashes
We’ll rant an’ we’ll roar – fury clashes
O’er our blood and bloody ashes

It’s round the maelstrom we’ve got to go
Chasing Captain’s treasure through ice and snow

Farewell an’ adieu to you fair lasses – lightening flashes
O’er our blood and bloody ashes
Farewell an’ adieu to you fair roses – lightening flashes
O’er our blood and bloody ashes
We’ll rant an’ we’ll roar – fury clashes
O’er our blood and bloody ashes

The winds be mighty, tis getting draughty
We’ll see her through, we’re the mighty mighty.

Farewell an’ adieu to you fair lasses – lightening flashes
O’er our blood and bloody ashes
Farewell an’ adieu to you fair roses – lightening flashes
O’er our blood and bloody ashes
We’ll rant an’ we’ll roar – fury clashes
O’er our blood and bloody ashes

For your love sweet lasses, we promise to return
For your love sweet roses, we brave this sea churn

Farewell an’ adieu to you fair lasses – lightening flashes
O’er our blood and bloody ashes
Farewell an’ adieu to you fair roses – lightening flashes
O’er our blood and bloody ashes
We’ll rant an’ we’ll roar – fury clashes
O’er our blood and bloody ashes

  1. Bravo, Meena, bravo! You’ve done it so well. I haven’t had the courage to begin that challenge as yet. It will be my afternoon work or evening endeavor, but it cannot be now.

I’ll use yours as inspiration, my friend. Thank you so much for doing yours first.

  4. Impressive! Sea shanties have a definite style, and you’ve nailed it! Monty has a whole CD of them, and every once in a while, we listen. And sing! That’s how I know. The thing to realize, is that most people don’t even have a clue what one is. You’ve got the rhythm and the vernacular of that genre. Brava, lady!!
